09/11/05 Image Notes:

The image above was created using the blue and red flitered images from the wide field DSS 2. However, this was not my first attempt at combining this image, so I'm going to backtrack a little. My original version is displayed below. Looks pretty crummy, eh? Yesterday when I first ran across the wide field DSS images, I knew I had to find some nice extended nebulae to play with. But the DSS images don't come in BVR; they are BRI. First I tried combining the three with B=blue, R=green and I=red; it looked horrendously bad, and I couldn't adjust it. Then I thought I'd try a tip given on the FITS Liberator web site in their step by step directions, of creating pseudo-green channel to combine with the blue and red filtered images (you can follow the previous link for an explanation of the process). As you can see below, it's not too impressive, and no matter how I tweaked the different color layers I just couldn't get it right. But it was an interesting (although frustrating) exercise. Since the image wasn't beautiful, I thought I'd try another trick on it that I had picked up just a few days before. Go on to the next page to see...
