Experiments in HDR (high dynamic range) Photography and Tone Mapping

Series #4

Clouds, taken on 2/25/07 from Polvadera, NM.

Back to three images combined as HDR  then tone mapped in Photomatix. This cloud formation was so impressive that it looked pretty good even in the original image, but as always, more detail came out in the HDR version. Unfortunately more detail came out in the less than attractive landscape as well. There was not much further processing done in Photoshop, probably just adjusting levels a bit.

What a waste to have such a lovely cloud with such an unsightly landscape, so I thought I'd try to replace the land with something more picturesque.

Fantasy image (okay, not quite believable :-)

Always looking for improvement...

The next two are taken from a similar shot, but I worked primarily with the original jpeg. I tone mapped the RAW file in Photomatix,
but only copied the clouds from the tone mapped version and made it a layer on the regular jpeg to bring out more cloud detail.
There was a LOT of dodging and burning in both images, going for different effects.

Here I was trying to hide the ugly house. This version got me another approvers choice on WeatherUnderground ...

... and it was shown on the KRQE 13 evening news broadcast by Mark Ronchetti on 2/28/07 -- again, thanks Mark!)

The one below was to acknowledge the run down house in the picture and focus on it rather than try to hide it.

In this form it got 22nd place out of 691 images in the DP Challenge (an online digital photography contest).
Hmm, wonder when I can pull that off again...
