Session 1: Activity Image Gallery

The "spectroscope" below was assembled from a variety of lenses and a holographic grating. The light source is a flash light; lens 1 is a slide projecter lens; the slit was created with two single-edge razor blades taped into a slide mount; lens 2 is a telescope eyepiece; the grating is a 12,000 lines per inch holographic plastic diffraction grating mounted in slide holder; lens 3 is part of a telescope eyepiece; the screen at the focal plane is a piece of white posterboard. It took me about 45 minutes to get this to work. The spectrum produced is pictured below.
